We ditched AT&T for a Callcentric VoIP connection using a Linksys PAP2T a while back. The expected good news is that doing so slashed our phone bill, the unexpected good news is that we have a plethora of options for blocking annoying callers, but the bad news is that people to whom Jennifer is speaking (including me at work) would hear spurious DTMF tones. Turns out this is called talkoff and occurs when the speaker (generally a woman due to the higher pitch) excites the DTMF detector, causing the tone to be regenerated. One I identified the problem, it was a simple matter to fix this by changing the DTMF Tx Method from Auto to InBand.
