What were the designers at Microsoft smoking when they decided to replace the floating toolbox (formatting palette) with the ribbon? All modern Macs have a wide-screen display, which means they have more horizontal than vertical room. So why replace the toolbox, which we could put to the side of the document, with a fixed ribbon that takes up valuable vertical screen real estate? With previous versions of Word, we could move the toolbox to the side of the document window and stretch it vertically to maximize the number of lines visible on-screen at any time. That option is now off the table.

Imagine my horror to find that this disaster is replicated across Excel and Powerpoint! Let's hope that Microsoft fixes this screw-up real soon.
